My very own stained glass lily lamp

These are my own lamps!

The lamp on the left is a lily lamp and the right is a Cala lily lamp that gives a peacock feather impression…

Stained glass lamps are a light source and a decoration that brighten a room in both ways…

The shades of these stained glass lamps are constructed with the same technique as stained glass windows. It is a decorator piece that was originally credited to an incredible artist who started with painting, jewelry design, glass work, and then stained glass windows. His name was Louis Comfort Tiffany.

Tiffany lamp designs

Tiffany started the company that became famous for these beautiful, quality stained glass lamps. Many of the Tiffany lamp designs incorporate glass cabochons that are definitely a characteristic of his jewelry background. Even today, these type of lamps are referred to as Tiffany-style lamps. The Tiffany designs are very replicated, but there is no limit to the possible lamp designs now.

The company of artists who made Tiffany lamps were mostly women…

The first real Tiffany lamp was made around 1895. This first one as well as the most artistic and valuable of the lamps have been tracked to an artist and designer named Clara Driscoll. She was one of the “Tiffany girls” who worked for Tiffany’s firm, and is believed to be the designer of the famous dragonfly design lamps. Driscoll was also one of the highest paid women of her time.

The Tiffany history that led to these lamps…

Louis Comfort Tiffany’s father, Charles Lewis Tiffany, founded Tiffany & Company. Tiffany & Company was a luxury jewelry and specialties retailer. In 1851, during his time with the earlier version of the company, Charles established the English standard for Sterling Silver. Louis Comfort Tiffany was born into this jewelry family and became the first Design Director for that company in 1902.

Louis’s interest & skill set

Tiffany started out in painting and jewelry, then moved onto glass-working. He began an interior designer business called Louis Comfort Tiffany and Associated American Artists. This company designed the wallpaper, furniture, and textiles used for doing the decorating. Tiffany was skilled in glass blowing, ceramics, enamels, and of course, metalwork and jewelry.

Louis started into glass work & stained glass

The interior design company ended after 4 years and he started his glass making firm. He presented his first blown glass art work from his newly built glass factory at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. They attracted the attention of a number of important people and his pieces were bought and put on exhibit at many notable museums. He also made stained glass windows. Some of them incorporated painted glass designs.

What makes these lamps such great decorator pieces

There are so many reasons to love this artistic glass-work. The design seems solid and opaque in dim lighting. It seems to glow with vibrant new life and focus when lit up inside. It can cause colored light patterns external to the lamp as well. The appearance is ornate, classic, and elegant. They add warm light to the room that is inviting and peaceful.

There are designs that have floral, nature, and geometric themes. Tiffany was part of the Aesthetic and Art Nouveau movement in art. The base can be a complimentary sculpted form, or a light up stained glass work as well. These add a distinctive and stylish warmth to any environment.

Modern Tiffany-style stained glass lamps

Louis Comfort Tiffany and his studio company made the real Tiffany lamps. There are plenty of companies that have Tiffany in the name, but they are Tiffany-style lamps that are reproductions or imitations of the original lamps. Louis Comfort Tiffany died in 1933.

Use of Tiffany in the name…

These modern companies include: Dale Tiffany, Inc., Meyda Tiffany, Robert Louis Tiffany, and Warehouse of Tiffany. Dale Tiffany, Inc. was founded in 1979. Meyda Tiffany is a composite name for the names of the founders (Meyer and Ida Cohen) and was founded 30 years ago.

Since all my research yields nothing for Robert Louis Tiffany, I think I stay clear of these. This name is a merging of many Tiffany family names that seems deliberately misleading to a larger degree. That strikes me as way too deceptive.

Unique dragonfly & flower lamp

Mission style dragonfly & floral lamp

This lamp is a good example because it has the mission lamp shape, and both the filigree dragonfly as well as floral in the design.
