So Many Devices Now For Effective DIY Home Security And Don’t Require Security Company Fees

The focus here is to provide the information on equipment to give you good, reasonable, practical home security. This is the equipment that you can use without the need for a monthly fee to a professional security service. Most of us cannot afford that. Armed properly, you can decide for yourself what you want and how you want it set up. These are all the highest rated products, whether they are new or have been around for a while.

First I cover the home security general planning information. Then I explain the products and help to illuminate what your choices are for communication and compatibility. The types of communication and protocols involved in the smart home security systems are very complex. I have an article to help you with that. There are pros and cons that need to be understood and may be dependent on your location, preferences, and priorities.

Practical Home Security – Let’s look at the big picture that is valuable to know…

Good doors and windows

Most doors are constructed in a way that makes them actually hollow. They are not as sturdy as they appear. With the external doors, they are usually metal or strong enough wood that they are not easy to break through. Solid doors are the most secure, but they are also heavy and expensive. The windows are a far easier point of access than doors. Many people have very decorative doors with windows in their design that compromise their security. You will want a security system that lets you know when the windows are compromised.

Improve your door

You can strengthen the door situation by means of a strike plate. This is a metal plate that protects the latch part of the door. It makes it more difficult to kick the door in at the latch point. Another way to reinforce your door is to reinforce the door jam… meaning the framework that holds the door. Also, you could remove the short little screws that come with the door latch plates and hinges, and replace them with a long sharp thread screws that will hold more strongly. There may be reasons that the door construction or hardware design will not allow for these kind of screw changes.

Reinforce

This is far and away the highest rated and most popular strike plate on Amazon. 4.6 out of 5 stars with over 2,500 reviews

You can use a kit like this to reinforce the door. This includes those strike plates, plus plates to reinforce the hinge bracket areas as well. The long hardware for better strength for these, come in the kit. 4.5 out of 5 stars with over 1,600 reviews

It is important to maintain your door well. Don’t let the knobs and hardware become loose. Make sure that if you have a slot, that it is not possible to stick an arm through and unlock the door. Pet doors are also an easy entry access. Door hinges must be internal. The pins can be removed from hinges and the door taken off otherwise. It is good to have a small window or peep hole to see who is outside, when needed.

Pet door that will lock against entry from anything not your pet

This pet door works in cooperation with your pet’s microchip. If there is no ID signal… it stays locked. Raccoons cannot pry it open, which says a great deal (see video below). This pet door is highly rated.

The chip compatibility is with :

15-digit microchips (also known as FDXB)

10-digit microchips (also known as FDXA and Trovan® Unique)

9-digit microchips (also known as Avid® Secure/Encrypted)

Windows

Windows should have good latches to lock them. Many designs allow for secondary locking as well, such as a properly placed bar. Since it is easy to break a window with something like a cloth to muffle the sound, that is the easy entry for an intruder. In my opinion, the big focus of your security should be on the windows. Sensors to alert when they are tampered with is the best way to handle them. The window in your door design may be the prime target if they can break that and reach the latch of the door. This is fast entry.

Good door and window locks

It is a good idea to have deadbolts on the outside doors. The windows are the easiest entry for a break-in. Windows are no protection when they are open and a screen can just be popped out or cut open. The option for this case is air conditioning to regulate temperature conditions without the windows being open or to put some kind of barrier outside of them. Another security solution at the windows is sensors that detect a break when someone comes through them.

My strategy thinking

I think that windows are probably the most important points to monitor and that includes windows inside the doors. Security companies all market contact sensors for windows and doors, but I question the value of investing in a lot of these. They will alert you if that door or window is opened. This kind of device doesn’t care if someone breaks your window and enters.

If you set a motion sensor across the line of windows, you are alerted whether it is opened or broken… or your window is already open and the only “barrier” is your window screen. The contact sensors are of value for a door, but does it outweigh the hassle for you coming and going? They are a good choice for a rarely used door. Motion sensors and security cameras are your most valuable and practical tools here.

Make sure your garage door is not an easy entry

Automatic garage doors introduce risks to your house security. You can choose to do the old fashioned way and not have an automatic garage door opener in the situation. Thieves can possibly use a wire tool to catch the emergency release lever for the garage door. The easiest way to avoid this issue is to remove the cord. You can attach one when you need it in that rare situation where it is useful to you.

Installation of a wireless keypad and creation of entry codes for access is a great possibility. A good addition is a motion sensor light outside the garage door that will be a big help in disrupting unwanted activity. Also setting up a lock on the inner door of your garage is an additional security aide that is very valuable.

Get to know your neighbors – look out for each other

Know your neighbors and watch out for each others’ houses. If they are suspicious of that moving truck that is outside of your house, they know to call the police. When they know you are on vacation, they can be extra vigilant. They can take care of your pets and take in your mail while you are away. If they recognize your friends and family members that visit, they will remember someone coming around that is unfamiliar and hopefully ask them questions.

Eliminate blind spots/problem locations

Any location in your house and yard area that are blind spots should be dealt with. This can be done with lighting and/or camera. Landscaping can provide hiding spots that need to be considered as well.

Use lighting well

Lighting is always important to security. Ones that have motion sense and come on automatically are easy and inexpensive. They can alert to a problem before a pet even becomes aware. Lighting can scare off pest animals and unwanted people. They work together with surveillance cameras to provide good security. Having lights that are set up on timers can also be handy to make it appear like you are home, even when you are not.

This tool allows you to turn on and off your built in lights that aren’t on a plug from your smart phone…

This allows you to turn any item on a built-in house switch on or off on timers. You can randomize their time for being turned on when you are away from home, in order to fool anyone that may be watching your house. You can control it with a Wemo app or Alexa.

It works with any switch that is not a 3-way switch. Easy to install.

Planning out what you need

Have a dog or tech version of one…

If there is a dog that will sound a warning when strangers come around, that is a great help. Remember that this is going to require accommodations when you are away. This is another case where your neighbors can possibly help you. Maybe you will have a friend who can take care of them for you while away. You have the option of getting tech that makes the dog warning sounds when your house is disturbed without the need for a dog.

These tech version of a barking dog alert have radar sensitivity that is adjustable from 10-20 feet. Volume is also adjustable. Powered by AC power supply. Also takes 8 AA back-up batteries (not included) in case of power loss. Unit needs to face in the direction you want to detect motion. Detection is limited from the sides and rear. The included remote control lets you Arm and Disarm the system, as well as set off a Panic alarm.

This one can be set for ring tone responses instead of the dog bark sound… kind of like some stores use. It can do 3 different dog barks. This can also be set for both sounds and a flashing LED light.

Max volume is 110 db

Range of 1000 ft open area

Indoor/Outdoor use

Hide valuables in tricky places

Don’t hide them in the freezer, closet, under the mattress, etc. They know to look in these places. Get creative, come up with really different locations.

Have self defense tools handy

This does not have to be a gun. Not everyone is able to go this route. Have tools like pepper spray, stun gun, self defense baton, bat, or maybe a super bright flashing flashlight to stun and disorient them. I like the big 3 or 4 battery flashlights and carry one in my car. These are dual purpose.

Put out warning signs

Professional security companies put their signs and labels around in plain sight for a good reason. The notice that there is security can often be the deterrent without even testing it.

Hide your important items

Hide or protect all wiring exterior to your home. Make it difficult to find or disconnect. Maybe you would like to have a safe hidden in a unique, obscure location that is difficult to find. If you think a safe is too expensive to invest in, there is another aspect of this that you should consider. You can get a type of safe that is made of material that is protection from fire and water. This can be valuable to protect important documents in the event of a fire or flood, which is an additional benefit.

Backup power

FOR YOUR SECURITY SYSTEM

Plan on backup power for your security devices. You want to have your security system to still function when it loses power. This may be as simple as battery backup. You want to be sure that you can still get alerts as well.

FOR YOUR RESIDENCE

Blackouts are a time when security can be more important. This may be more than an inconvenience for your area. If the intruder is able to disconnect the power to your home, they may gain an advantage. You might want to have a generator system that kicks in for this case. This is extremely expensive. With today’s mobile phone system, we do not have to worry about this line being cut at least.

Lock up your tools and equipment

Keep your tools outside locked up and maybe additionally chained to prevent being used to break into your home. Such items can include ladders, saws, hammers, pry bars, etc.

Keep your car keys near you at night

If you hear something that seems alarming, you can press the alarm button for your vehicle. This may scare an intruder away. You also have it handy for if you want to get away fast. Thieves can find a key outside under a fake rock or under the welcome mat. They can also observe someone using this hidden key. A much better setup is to leave the spare key with someone you trust.

Be smart about time away

While you are away from home or traveling, don’t post about it on social media. Wait until you get back home. You don’t want to broadcast that you are not home. The news may travel to the wrong places. Make it appear that you are still home. Let neighbors or friends you trust know your plans. Have them take care of pets and mail. They can keep an eye on your house for you.

Create your plan

I know this is an unpleasant thing, but you need to have plans in place for many events: fire, flood, power outage, and security issues. If your power goes out… do you want a backup security situation? Do you have a way to escape from your home in an emergency, especially from upper level floors? Maybe you want to have something like a rope ladder that can roll out and allow better escape. What do you do if there is an intruder in your house? Make your family aware of all these tools and what they must do if the event happens.

Test your security and plan

Educate your family about all the resources and security. Run through drills to handle things appropriately when the need arises.

Communication for smart home products

These are all protocols that work for wireless devices that do not require power to make connection and communicate: Z-Wave, ZigBee, Wi-Fi, Thread, and Bluetooth. That is very important to home security. Z-wave is a wireless communication protocol for home automation and is compatible with Amazon Echo. It is a a mesh network using low-energy radio waves to communicate.

IFTTT (if this, then that) is an easy, free, web-based service that creates chains of simple conditional statements (applets) which get your apps and devices to work together. The mobile apps and devices most commonly use iOS and Android.

This will give you much more thorough information about wireless communication… I also cover how to protect yourself from the KRACK hack.

Alerts when no internet connection

This is an extremely important tool for your home security if it uses internet communication. Push notice is a read only message that is sent from a remote server to a connected device. There are tools for sending messages even while internet is out. This can be done by use of Short Message Service (SMS), Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS), Google Cloud Messaging (GCM), and the newer Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM).

There are apps that allow you to communicate without internet on your phone by the way. These are OFF-THE-GRID-APPS that can be used: Bridgefy (free) and WhatsApp (free). Sadly the free apps Hike Messenger and Firechat are gone now…

Safer from hacking…

There are systems that use the WiFi method of wireless communication, but you will have to overcome the “hackability” of this. Various protocols and add on patches can protect WiFi passwords better (WPA2 + AES is the best one), but a hacker only needs proximity and the right equipment to intercept the signal and determine what has been sent. I would not use this one and much prefer ones that use encryption like Z-wave and Zigbee. The best practices that follow will help in your security.

Best practices

Take precautions on the internet for your system and protect the data and your patterns of usage. You may want to have a password for your phone and a second password for your security system. This helps if someone gets access to your phone or you lose your phone.

Passwords

ABSOLUTELY CHANGE THE DEFAULT PASSWORD for your devices and systems to strongly secure passwords!!!  They should use upper and lower case letters, numbers, and symbols. Change your password often.

Separation

Keep your computer networks separate from the security system. If someone gets your laptop password, they don’t get access to your security network. Good routers can segment multiple networks. You can have a guest network and an internal one. It can be set up with some wireless and others that are not. If your router doesn’t do this, you can get a second one to set up a separate network.

Hide

Configure your wireless router so that it is not visible. To connect, the user must know the name of it. This makes your system a little more trouble for a hacker to mess with. Don’t allow people to access your devices, especially the USB ports on them. Only allow trusted people to work on or repair your devices. They can be compromised.

UPS backup

Push notifications probably only have a limited time for effective process before they stack up and run into problems. The best security setup is to put a Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) backup devices on all your modem, routers, and hubs. This way you don’t even have to worry about start up process or timing of procedures for wireless communication with base equipment. Your system will stay in function without problems. All that is needed is maintenance and periodic assessment of the UPS equipment.

Security cameras

Method of recording for cameras

If you choose to have security cameras, there are many considerations involved. There are 2 design choices: continuous recording and motion sensor activated recording. Do you want both outside and inside security cameras? Your security cameras can have night vision capability. Then another consideration is if you want to back up your security recording to the cloud or keep it in your home system. 2-factor authentication can add to your security as well.

Method of storage

Recording your security camera footage to the cloud will insure that you have the recordings. This eliminates the risk of an intruder managing to find your DVR machine or computer, and get rid of what it has recorded.

Maybe you can just dedicate an old computer to be exclusively for this storage task and hide it really, really well. Most of us at some point have an old or outdated computer that has been replaced. When you send the video to cloud storage, that can take you back to the monthly payment requirement. You will have to decide what quality picture you need, and this could be closely related to the monitor size you use. The security footage storage can be set for a certain amount of time before overwriting the old data.

Cloud vs Local recordings

Freedom from fees

In order to avoid another monthly fee in your system for storage, you have to take into consideration recording storage to the cloud. There is a very deceptive practice by some security systems to talk about free systems when they give you a brief period of free cloud usage. Most of these free usage periods are a matter of hours, the best ones I saw were for a week.

What to look for in your security equipment storage

You may prefer a system that automatically sends your security recordings to the cloud and uses local recordings for a secondary method. This is a cost that I am working to eliminate here. You have the information to choose whether this method is one that you want or not. Security cameras that save locally use DVRs (or NVRs) or microSD cards.

Policies can change

Another consideration to think about here is what will happen if you outfit your home with a particular brand of monitoring equipment, and this company changes policy for whatever reason… You may now be faced with paying a different fee for your cloud usage. Look at contracts for this usage carefully.

Cloud recording for security cameras

Besides the expense that I do not want, the other problem that I have with cloud streaming and storage of home security monitoring is privacy. If someone can gain access to that monitoring within my home, that is intrusion into my private space that I don’t want. We shouldn’t have to make this trade either. If I can eliminate this from the recipe, that is what I want to do.

Netatmo cameras

This line of cameras have many features including face recognition. Even if you use local recordings for your videos (microSD cards), screen shots from your videos are sent to the cloud for storage. The storage for these is free. Storage limit for the microSD cards is 32 GB. The indoor camera is Netatmo Welcome and the outdoor one is Netatmo Presence.

Yet another consideration is a camera + flood light combination

You may be interested in a security camera that uses a flood light. This method is designed to stun an intruder that triggers the equipment. The other benefit here is that the sudden blinding light causes them to look in that direction and the opportunity to get a great image of their face is extremely good.

Arlo security system

Choices

This system is easy to install, gives quality HD video that is motion and sound triggered. The wireless cameras (indoor/outdoor) are the Arlo, Arlo Pro, and Arlo Pro 2. Their AC powered cameras (indoor) are the Arlo Q and Arlo Q Plus. Arlo Go (indoor/outdoor) is their mobile camera capable of 3G and 4G. They also have a great baby monitor (Arlo Baby). The hub for the system connects to your router. You can enable and disable push notifications at three levels: the mode level, the Arlo app level, and the iOS system level. They can be enabled or disabled.

It is possible to view the live feed from Arlo smart cameras directly within the SmartThings app, right alongside their other devices. You can have home monitoring and remote control within a single interface.

Wisenet security system

Originally, this was Samsung, but the company was sold. This gets great reviews and ratings. You have the option of both wired and wireless. There are a lot of choices in apps to work with these on Google Play store, but the Wisenet wave seems to be the most popular one.

DIY Lorex security system

Lorex started out as a Canadian company. After 30 years in this business, they have spread out to North and South America too. They offer competitively priced quality cameras that are both wired and wireless. Their recordings are stored on the equipment and are not cloud based. These are compatable with Alexa, Google Assistant, etc. This is an established company that will not disappear on you.

PHONE SYSTEM + MULTIPLE DEVICES

In this case the brand is Fortress. This system uses a landline or Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP). The landline version has a higher approval rating. This system has no app or cloud storage. The reliability is very good and does an excellent job of sending notifications for alarms. The equipment is affordable. Fortress requires a landline or Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP).

SO2

SO2 uses landline and Voice Over Intenet (VOIP) – Dials 6 emergency contacts, plays a 10 second, pre-recorded message when an alarm is triggered.

VEA 3G/4G

The Ves 3G/4G Security (GSM) systems are similar to SO2, but support landline and GSM SIM cards for communication. You have to buy the SIM card from them and are responsible for any overcharges. Once a SIM card is installed to a GSM panel, it calls 6 contacts in sequence and sends a text alert to 3 additional contacts. When you are using a landline, text alerts are not available.

EXPLANATION OF THE ABOVE REQUIREMENTS FOR VEA SYSTEM 3G is short for 3rd generation and 4G is short for 4th generation (most modern) broadband cellular network technology. Global System for Mobiles (GSM) is a major cellular network that includes AT&T and T-Mobile. This Subscription Identity Module or SIM card is a smart card that allows the users information to be transferred between phone handsets.

Total Security

Total Security panels require a cellular connection. When an alarm is triggered, it calls 8 contact numbers in sequence using your SIM card. Since it uses your SIM card, all fees for the call minutes are charged to you. This setup supports the Total Security app which you can use to control your system (remote arm/disarm) and monitor activities (event log).

Security Cameras

Camera that uses the cloud, but a really good deal

Nest cameras offer 30 days of free rolling recordings. This is a free cloud storage deal that is better than most. I have found an even better deal though… there are a few people who have managed to reverse engineer the proper IDs used with this recording system and share the code. You can set up your system to deliver your camera video to the location you choose. I am not sure how long this will be possible. I have also seen a lot of complaints about hacking of these camera systems and Nest will not provide information about the IP address for those gaining access.

NYXCAM AHD CAMERA PRODUCTS – The AHD means analog high definition… uses coax cable to transmit HD video from security cameras to DVR. This is a far more safe method of security recording.

Cameras that require NO CLOUD usage

These systems are complete and require no recording fees or cloud storage like so many other systems. They are easy to set up and user friendly. What else could you want, right?

Samsung SmartCam

I do NOT have Samsung SmartCam here because, although the equipment is highly rated, the app for these is absolutely hated. That is an important factor. It seems to have had problems with hacking vulnerability. They are still having many issues…

D-Link camera systems

These cameras have been extremely popular. They have turned out to have a lot of vulnerabilities for their remote access feature though. These have been tested and found by researchers… and reported by Consumer Reports, PC Mag and others. The problem is un-encrypted video access…

Maybe they can fix this, but I am seeing this information online for them for many years up to 2019. Not seeing anything after that point… what I want most to see is that it is fixed. I will watch this…

Reolink Security Camera Systems for front door

The Reolink cameras use advanced encryption, like the SSL encryption, WPA2, and AES encryption. Hacking of the streaming for these cameras is possible. There is a project to work around this and use a safer method called Neolink on gitub at thirtythreeforty/neolink. Neolink allows you to use NVR software such as Shinobi or Blue Iris to receive video from these cameras instead.

8 Cameras

Keyless lock

There are 2 directions you can take with this technology… one is to set up your keyless lock to be independent of the cloud, and the other is to use encryption that gives you that better security for your internet connected lock control.

August has good keyless lock encryption

The August line of locks is installed in place of the interior side of a standard deadbolt lock. August Smart Lock Pro is compatible with all commercial Z-Wave hubs like Wink, SmartThings, and others. They communicate with your Z-Wave enabled security panel. Also, these work with HomeKit, Alexa, Google Assistant, Nest, IFTTT, etc. Traditional door keys will still be useful for locking and unlocking your door. The installation is simple and well guided. This company prides itself on installation taking under 15 minutes because of a mobile app that guides step by step on the process. The lock automatically calibrates, once installed.

These keyless lock systems have door sense to let you know if the door is ajar. This door sense capability can monitor how long the door has been open, automatically lock the door when it closes, and send an alert to you if it opens by accident or if it gets forced open by an intruder. These locks will integrate with a wide variety of 3rd party devices. This lock can be set to automatically lock and unlock as you come and go from your home through the use of GPS information.

August Smart Lock devices 3rd generation – works with Alexa

They get bundled with the August Connect Wi-Fi Bridge and can support Wi-Fi, HomeKit, Bluetooth and Z-Wave Plus connections. Use of the August Connect Wi-Fi Bridge extends the range of function for the lock system so you can lock and unlock with your phone from anywhere. The new Bluetooth chipset for this 3rd generation is supposed to lengthen the life of the battery. Uses 4 AA batteries.

August smart locks replace the thumbturn on the inside of your door, making your regular deadbolt smarter, more secure and way more convenient. Keep the outside of your door the same, and your keys just in case (but you won’t need them).

Lock and unlock your door with the August app on your phone or Apple Watch. Close the door, automatically secures after a set amount of time (optional feature). Installs easaily in about 10 minutes. 4.3 out of 5 stars for over 4,600 reviews

August Smart Lock devices 4th generation – works with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit, Samsung SmartThings and more.

This one connects to your WiFi and does not need the hub that the old ones use. The size is smaller. This model has a battery change (Two CR123A batteries)… it is not comparable physically to the previous models.

August smart locks fit on the inside of your door, making your regular deadbolt smarter, more secure and way more convenient. Keep your keys just in case (but you won’t need them). Quickly and easily share permanent, scheduled or temporary access to your home with friends, family and other people you trust. Possible to add a keypad.

With Auto-Lock and DoorSense, your home automatically secures once your door is closed, or after a set amount of time. Use your phone’s biometric recognition for two-factor authentication (optional). Installs easily in about 10 minutes, and this one does not need a hub… 4.2 out of 5 stars with over 8,200 views

Local recording for Ring Video Doorbell

This video doorbell camera records to a local SD card, however, you need a Eero Wi-Fi 6 router base station to do this… that is where the MicroSD card connects. Click on Enrolled Cameras to opt cameras into local processing and storage once your cameras are set up. You really don’t want the card accessible at the door unit.

This router has TrueMesh technology intelligently routes traffic to reduce drop-offs so you can reliably stream 4K video, game, and video conference. Eero has a LONG list of compatible devices for connecting to the router. It says on their forum that it is compatible with Reolink. Arlo will connect to the Eero, but does not use the Eero Wi-Fi, only the base station. The base station gets connected to the Eero network.

Reolink door camera (wireless & good view range)

This is a good option. When you want to have something in a form of a camera at the front door, but not obvious to the visitor like the video doorbell. Also, this avoids the BIG limitations of view through a peephole. These can have really good range of view.
