Plastic Free Makeup and Personal Care Products

In order to find the makeup and personal care products to use that do not have bad ingredients like plastic… you have to know what they these are called. Then there are other ingredients that may not be desirable in your products as well. It can be a lot of work to find the ones that are free of these. I will share the work I have done and you can decide if these are good choices for you far more easily.

Plastic in personal care products

I did not like when cleansing product manufacturers started adding tiny plastic beads to body washes. It made me happy to see that this action got the disapproval and attention it deserved from the public. These were removed, and a marketing campaign to win back public approval happened. Most people went on, but I took notice of the fact that they switched to liquid plastic instead. I quit buying those body washes as they became prevalent.

Manufacturers of personal care products are using liquid plastic ingredients to coat us in a plastic film in order to seal in moisture and make our skin and hair look shiny. We already have a huge plastic waste problem that is bad for the environment. How can liquid forms of plastic be removed? If we want this to change, we must use our purchasing power as our vote. Consequently, we need to stop buying these products, so these companies will change.

Plastic in cosmetics

Recently, I began researching personal care product ingredients. This is a long and involved process since there are so many. Some have been studied and others are more unclear. I began by investigating skin creams. After that, I went on to analysis of my favorite cosmetics. The usage of these kinds of ingredients in cosmetics floored me! This has also been going on for a long time. They can be more problematic here because they seal in bacteria, dirt, and things that can cause breakouts.

Plastic elements are handy as fixatives to make the makeup stick well, as thickeners, to spread smoothly, etc. They are used hand in hand with other ingredients that are bad for the environment as well. The constituents that work for hiding wrinkles well get even more complicated. Cosmetics can have a great number of these elements. This is an even more important product with which to escape from them. The makeup list provided here are all great choices.

Personal care products often contain these ingredients to watch out for and avoid. You can use this list to evaluate your current makeup. I have 2 separate ingredient lists. The first includes polymers used in many ways. The second list is the silicone ingredients. Silicones are actually a subset of polymers. After these, I will list the plastic-free cosmetic choices with their ingredient list, then the list of those ingredients that are good for our skin.

TALC… this is not to be trusted! Talc is embedded with asbestos where it has been created. The personal care products industry has long been lying to us about talc. You may have heard about the illnesses and law suits. Let’s just steer clear of this ingredient! We cannot change past exposure, but we can surely avoid this! If you are searching for a substitute for talc, cornstarch may be what you want.

There are ingredients that are used in personal care products and mess with our hormones

Some endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are parabens, benzophenones, bisphenols, and phthalates. These can all be found in our personal care products. Our hormones regulate our metabolism, our organ activity and function, our ability to have children… These are probably good to avoid.

Fragrance

This is a vague category that can hide bad ingredients… especially the EDCs. We don’t need fragrance in our products really. Maybe this is one that you should be watching out for and avoiding where you can.

Plastic-free cosmetics

These are the products that I have found that are free of these constituents. In fact, there are a lot ingredients that are considered beneficial. The others are considered safe and neutral. They are all free of talc. Talc itself is not a bad ingredient, but if it is not processed right, it can contain carcinogens.

I LOVE THIS STUFF!!!! It set my makeup and held up all day. This made my skin look like porcelain. It is a matte look, which is another thing I loved…no shiny oily look. This powder has never caused any problems for my skin.

SPECIAL CONCERN: Chlorphenesin can cause dermatitis, Lauroyl Lysine can be comedogenic

Lauroyl lysine is a amino acid derivative made from coconut fats and oils. Lysine is a valuable amino acid needed by the skin. It is not clear if this derivative is beneficial. If you are sensitive to coconut oil, it can cause clogged pores and acne. I have used pure coconut oil on my face and did have a little trouble. My skin became conditioned to it with use and I stopped having this problem.

Chlorphenesin can cause skin irritation as well. It is used as a preservative that is an alternative to the use of parabens and seems to be a very mild one. Parabens have revealed themselves to have very bad effects on the body so I consider this a very good substitution.
