Comment section – You can control what comments happen on your site

One thing that can be a problem for your site if you have it open to comments is that people will place unrelated nuisance ads. You may get ones that are offensive and ones that are spam. You can take control of this situation in a way that prevents the whole issue.

There are plugins that are free even, that will manage your comment section of your site in a very effective way. I feel that it is wrong to remove all comments you do not like. This can help you to improve your site.

I did SO MUCH RESEARCH and I was very lucky!

After reading up on a great many things for starting a website, I had lots of notes. Also I collected a list of plugins that are best to have from the very start. The comment section management plugin was included in this list. I had this under control and learned about it as I went, like many things about my website work. You don’t have to be expert at everything to get started. Learn as you go.

Your plugin can remove spam immediately as it comes in just like your email system does this

When I first started out, there was this website management organization that was placing their ads in my comment section. Every couple of days, some other source was placing this same ad… word for word in there. I did not have to have these nuisance ads at all.

One of the great things about paying for website hosting is that YOU decide what is on your site. If you want to place ads, YOU choose them. YOU get the profit from them. And… if like me… you don’t want any ads on your site, you can do that too! If someone wants their ads on your website, they have to ASK you and work it out with you!

Sets aside comments for you to review and decide if you want them to appear on your site

I have comments that come in that are kind from people who appreciate the content now. Healthy criticism gets appreciate from me too… This gives you the information to make improvements. I have had people kind enough to alert me about a problem when I am not aware, also when I was aware and in the process of making changes. This help is appreciated. Respond to these comments on the actions you will take and thank them.

It was not that way in the beginning. Mostly it was the people who want to place ads about something, maybe unrelated to your content and possibly even things that you would never choose to be involved with at all. If you are getting nothing but this type of input, be patient, don’t let it discourage you. When you have good content, good things will happen.

You can delete problem comments

You don’t have to be a victim to ugly language or offensive remarks. This is not something you have to put up with online OR on your website. There are people who find it entertaining to put offensive comments on websites. I do not understand this, nor do I understand why people want to break in and do damage to your online work either. Make an effort to have some protection for your site for that too. That is even more important than this type of management.

Here is the bad side…

The drawback to this wonderful management is that the person leaving comments may feel that your site is malfunctioning when they do not see their remark appear. You can address this with an explanation about your site performance in receiving their input, or however you choose.

Yet another choice…

Here is another option that you have… you can choose to have your comment section turned off. Remember, this is also your choice.

Starting around the end of August 2021, I ended up doing this. A WordPress update changed my comment section in ways that were not visible in my editor or preview of my posts. The problems caused were inconsistent among the posts… which was strange. It was causing hassles that I did not want to allow to cause any unhappiness to my generous visitors. One was getting multiple email notifications.

In addition, I had a unique huge onslaught of brute force access attempts from different source IPs at the same time that I had 3 comments from different visitors with the same base email service and giving the exact same product selling website. These three had over-the-top flattering comments. I decided this activity was all suspicious and turned it off. If you suspect that the comments are method to get inside and past your website security, you may value this option.

OFF can be temporary for comments

You might also choose to turn it off during a difficult time and then back on later on. If you run into a strange bug in performance, there are other people online who are sharing information on how to fix it. Find the safe and reliable website to get the resources you need.

My post that had the different behavior to the rest of the website posts was the oldest and most popular one. I could have just come up with a new fresh article to replace that one and would probably have gotten past the problem.

It is debatable whether having a comment section in your site is beneficial. Maybe it helps your SEO if done properly.  It could add to the content you are providing with the right community activity.

When you are getting comments from people who want to take the time to praise your articles, it shows that you are doing this well. Maybe once you reach that point, you don’t need the comment section anymore. Perhaps you just want to have comment input for certain posts and content, but not on others. You choose.
